Spin control

Question
I have been playing golf for a few years now and have told I have incredible power by most everyone I play with. From what I read I am able to hit about the same distance as some of longest guys on tour. Obviously I am missing some of there control and consistency but am still very long with out swinging out of my shoes. I hit the ball very high and just about everything drops and stops and thats from my 3 iron to my lob wedge and some times even my 3 wood and driver but I can't seem to be able to make the ball back up. Pretty much 70 yards and out the will just hit and stop or bounce forward a few feet and anything inside of that just runs a little. They look like they almost have no spin. I have tried lots of different soft three piece balls and seem to like the Pro V1X the most but still can't back the ball up or make any of my shorter shots check up. Trying to see if this some sort of swing flaw or if this is something you just learn over time. I have taught myself everything else but just can't seem to figure this one out. I take divots, hit ball first, and really don't see how I can hit drives 320, 7 iron 200, and pitching wedge 160 all pretty straight and consistent and be out of position. I'm just a little confused with the whole thing. Any help or advise is much appreciated. Thanks You.

Answer
Hi Dan,

You say "I hit the ball very high and just about everything drops and stops." That's fantastic. Don't worry about not being able to "back it up."

Backing it up is highly dependent upon:

1. the condition of the green
2. how much the green slopes from back to front
3. the backspin on your ball compared to the speed of the ball
4. the angle of impact

Since you hit the ball far and high, your impact speed will be higher than normal. Thus, unless you generate above average backspin, you won't "back it up."

Do other players you play with "back it up?"

Most times when you see the pros back it up, it's on firm greens with low friction, and, they're sloped. Yes, they are also hitting premium golf balls and generate max backspin. And, hitting one that bounces forward and then grabs and backs up is even more rare.

99.5% of golfers would love to have "your problem".

Hope this helps.
