Driver Shaft Issues

Question
Michael,

I recently purchased a new Callaway FT-iZ 10 degree stiff flex shaft that I was told fit my swing.  I went into the club buying process simply looking to replace my Cleveland HiBore 9 degree stiff flex driver because I had a tendency to hit the ball quite low off the tee and wanted to see if newer technology was really all it was hyped up to be (Callaway's new Forged Composite Drivers).

After playing only 18 holes with the club I noticed that the graphite near the hosel had started to peel.  So, Callaway replaced the shaft and sent it back just for this exact thing to happen again this time after only 9 holes of golf.  Callaway again replaced the Aldila Voodoo Shaft when again after 18 holes and probably 15 balls off the driving range (off a wooden tee not the rubber mats) again the shaft failed in the same place in the same way where the graphite was peeling on the club side of the shaft right at the hosel of the club.

This has happened over the course of a month and a half now so I've had some time to do research of my own.  I had my swing analyzed as well showing that my contact point across the face tends to be center to heel from low to mid height on the face.  The guy analyzing my swing seemed to think my swing is what is breaking the shafts and in no way do I miss treat my clubs because I've learned my lesson over time and a bent shaft in a wedge (not proud of that one).

So my question is just that! Is my swing causing the graphite to peel from the hosel or is something else the culprit?  I guess I'm surprised to hear that my swing could be causing it because of how little I've hit each club.  On average I hit my driver around 12 times a round due to Par 3's and my tendency to fall back on my 5 wood when I need to hit a ball in the fairway.  So each shaft has probably seen anywhere from 12 to 36 balls hit and each has come out broken.  Especially because I never had a shaft problem with my Cleveland and I'm pretty sure my swing hasn't changed that drastically over the years.

Answer
Thomas,

It is unfortunate that you have had continuous problems with this particular shaft. I can't imagine that your swing and contact point is causing this, especially after such a short time. I would call Callaway (888-382-9528) and ask if they have had an inordinate amount of shafts come back. It may have been a defective lot. If so look for a substitute shaft.

Thank you and good luck,

Michael
