If It Fits It Hits (lost track) .... followup
Question
QUESTION: What I have actually settled on now for the setup below the 7 wood is an Adams Tight Lies 9 wood (I did my own re-shaft on it with TT Lite XL), Louisville HL3 persimmon 34 hybrid, Ping Eye 2 yellow dot 8-PW, Vokey Spin Milled Wedges (54-11 c-c, 58-12 c-c, 60-07, and 64-07) and a two way chipping iron.
The follow up on the Ping Eye 2 vs Titleist DCI irons.... The Eye 2 8 iron hits about 2-3 yards farther than either 7 iron and I have 15 yards of separation between it and the 9 iron (which should be correct because the loft diff is 5 deg) and about 10 yards between the 9 and PW. The Louisville hybrid just plain out-performs either 6 iron and is a lot less work.
ANSWER: Thanks for the update Lou.

QUESTION: What is ironic is the Titleist 7 iron has a Dynamic Gold r-flex Sensicore shaft, the Ping Eye 2 7 iron has a KT-M stiff shaft and apparently the Eye 2 8 iron has a Dynamic Gold X flex shaft (the label is worn but saw part of an "X" on it). My swing speed with a driver at best is 92 mph and generally about 85. How is it that I can hit a so-called X flex 8 iron 3 yards farther than a well-hit regular flex 7 iron? My normal 8 iron carries around 135 yd.
Answer
If the overall weight is less, you'll swing it faster meaning more yardage.
If the club is even 1/2 inch longer, you'll hit it farther.
If the loft of the club is stronger, you'll hit it farther.
Even the swing weight would make a difference.
Irons that short don't flex a lot anyway unless you have a great deal of hand action.
