Course Records

Question
QUESTION: 1. If someone in a bonified medal competition records a score that betters the course record held, but this score is recorded in the second round of the competition on the same day, can this count as the new course record?

2. If the answer is no, is it fair to say that if they equal the course record in the second round then this should not be recognised, for the same reason?

thank you

ANSWER: Allan,

Good question. I would say that it would be a course record if the holes on the greens were in different locations than they were in the morning round.

If the holes were in the same position as they were in the morning round, this would not qualify as a course record.

Thank you,

QUESTION: Second part of the question was perhaps not answered, if the pins are in the same position on the second round how would you recognise an equal to the course record, perhaps no recognition is required due to your answer to the first part of the question??

ANSWER: Allan,

In my opinion it shouldn't count as a course record (or equal to the course record) if the hole positions were not changed.

Thank you

QUESTION: Final question, perhaps regreattably we have set a precedent and have allowed a course record to stand from a number of years ago when it was done during a Wednesday Sweep.
This is not a drawn competition but one where you choose your own partners and turn up to play either by booking online through our online booking system or you simply turn up and play with whoever?

If someone is to set a course record, what criteria should this be under/set against. Obviously course records are not in the rules of golf but there must be some criteria that would stand the test of time where you can assess/measure - have the conditions been met to recognise course records and equal to course records???

many thanks

Answer
The term "course record" is not defined in the Rules of Golf. However, it is generally accepted that a record score should be recognized as the official "course record" only if made in an individual stroke-play competition (excluding bogey, par or Stableford competitions) with the holes and the tee-markers in their proper medal or championship positions.

This is what I would use as the criteria. I would also add that if a course record is shot in the second round of the "sweep" competition that the holes and tees must have been changed for it to qualify.

Thank you,
