Driver Selection
Question
QUESTION: Hi Jim,
I"m a very amateur golfer, in fact, I've never even broken 100. But I love the game, and try to get out and play as often as I can. I"m using a friend's old Driver, and it's definitely time for me to get a new one. I've heard great things about the Taylor Made R11, especially since you can make adjustments to the club depending on how your hitting the ball. I"m only about 5'8 so not too tall, and I don't swing with a lot of power or club head speed. Do you have a good recommendation for a Driver that would fit my type of game, and at the same time a Driver that is forgiving if I make poor contact.
ANSWER: Bret,
Its always great to talk to a golfer that loves the game no matter the skill level,
The driver is the longest club in the bag and no coincidence it is the hardest club to hit too.
In order to break 100 AND hit the driver better I suggest a fitting first instead of buying from the rack.
Height, grip size, flex, loft, face angle LENGTH, are some of the specifications that you find to help play better golf. Even if you dont buy from the fitter you can go to a vendor and custom order the driver you want.
Second a lesson is a low expense to get even the basics. You would be suprised what you can learn from a fitting or a lesson.
Lastly and I mean Lastly, if you cant do either then I would look at the Adams, Bridgestone, or even Titleist products. Adjustable clubs are not made to correct a problem just tweak issues.
So, I suggest finding a fitter get a great driver for you and keep enjoying the game even more than before.
THanks
Jim

QUESTION: Jim,
Thank you very much for the advice, I think i'm going to go ahead and get a fitting. The question is, who does fittings, and how do I find one in my area? Do all Golf Shops do fittings?
Answer
Not all golf shops do fittings. I California there is a plethora of fitters. Look up the international clubmakers guild, or AGCP first. See if there is a fitter near you. Second I would check out the green grass folk. Meaning the people working at golf courses. and finally places like golf galaxy or dick sporting goods
