driver stiffness
Question
Don't need help with my game. I will tell you the situation. I would like your take on why. Am 63. Stumbled across a TM driver with a Graf Tour X shaft. Tried it. Absolutely awesome, both results and feel. Consistently straighter, longer and better trajectory than anything previous. Never previously hit an X shaft in a driver before. This one is super stiff. Over 9 on frequency chart. Also, judging by graphics on new same shaft sidexside, shaft has been tipped maybe 2". I doubt my club head speed is over 100. I have a slow transition. I use regular flex shafts in my irons. If I were to lose this driver I would be sick. So what factor is most important in explaining why this works. It has to have absolutely zero to do with club head speed. Thank you.
Answer
Hi Jim,
Shaft flex does not affect club speed directly. A golfer typically won't swing a more flexible shaft any faster or slower. However, the shaft does affect the "feel" of the club, which could influence club speed by improving timing.
My guess is that the club feels great to you, thus, you're swinging it better and making solid contact more often (which is the most significant secret to distance). As well, the weighting of the head and shaft, combined with the loft of the club, may be giving you close to optimum launch conditions (launch angle and amount of spin).
If you want a fun experiment, take the driver along with your old one to a golf center where they have a launch monitor. Then you'll get the numbers.
Regardless, keep on swinging and swinging well.
