Body lift
Question
Greetings...This is a problem I have been dealing with from time to time, mostly with my irons, and I can't seem to find a fix for it.
On my down swing just as I'm ready to make contact with my ball I tend to lift up my body and when I make contact I wind up thin hitting the ball and top it as well. Other golfers have seen me do it and once I committed myself to the shot, I realize it as well. Do you know a drill I can do to help correct this??
The other downside to this, is when I know I'm doing this, then I wind up dropping my shoulder and hitting it fat..No happy medium.
Thanks for any advice you can offer...Ken
Answer
Hello and thank you for asking. I am not sure how old you are or what kind of shape you are in, but it seems you need to strengthen your abs and obliques more and be stronger in your stance. If you do the drill where stand in your address position with no club, and with your arms across your chest, and just do a turn and turn, you will feel the abs working hard to keep you in position while the rest of your body stays relatively quiet. Memorize this feeling of the abs and then take the club and do the same and see your swing plane stay more consistent.
One more thing... most people do what you do because they are more concerned about hitting at/to the ball rather than swinging the clubhead through the ball. To rectify this, simply do the drill of putting a tee in the ground and hitting through the tee instead of the ball. Hitting an impact bag will also help.
