Club turning in hand at or after impact
Question
I am 81 old male with a handicap of 24 my lowest handicap was 7 at 39 years old. Since then it has been down hill and in the last 2 years I have gone from 16 to 24. I noticed you are a Ping Club Fitter. Recently I bought a set of Ping Clubs fitted by a pro. Since then I noticed the club turning in my hands just after impact. The ball goes straight or with a little draw if hit clean but fat shots becomes a pull.
The new clubs are Black Dot 1/2 inch short with SR shafts. My old clubs were Std Length R shaft 2 degrees flat. And the tendency was blocking out to right. Would this be club fitting problem or related to my swing?
Answer
Hello Kiyoshi:
It could be a clubfitting issue. What you describe sounds like the clubs are too upright for you. You mention your old clubs were 2 degrees flat. When clubs are too upright, the tendency is for the ball to be pulled or hooked and the feeling is that the heel of the club gets caught in the turf, which would certainly twist the club a bit in your hands at and through impact. Why are your clubs a 1/2 inch short of standard? I myself am only 5'2" tall but play standard length clubs. I believe if you simply cannot handle a longer club, then you should maybe think about playing a club that is a little shorter. But with your clubs now shorter and more upright, I bet that is your issue. So before you change out anything or go spend money on something else, ask the pro who fit you if you could test a few things to see if there is a difference in what happens and if you have the club twist in your hands at impact. See if you can hit some balls with different lengths and different lies to see for yourself, then make a decision. Of course the obvious thing also is to check to make sure you have a good grip, because if your grip is a little weak or is not real secure, it tends to slip around during the swing as well. Check those two things and I bet you find your answer.
