Is salmon fresh or salt water fish?

Salmon is both a freshwater and saltwater fish. Most species migrate from their freshwater birth rivers through estuaries into the vast expanse of the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans to feed and grow fat during several years at sea. At some point a mysterious urge triggers their extraordinary and exhausting return journey back to the exact stream of their birth where they spawn before dying.
