Does a fish lose ions as it moves from fresh water to salt water?

A fish loses water when moving from fresh water to salt water because the salt water is hypertonic to the fish's body fluids. The fish therefore drinks salt water to replace the water lost by osmosis. The salt in the salt water is actively transported out of the gut by the fish.
