Halibut Jig

Question
Hi Richard,

Great site!

I had a good day fishing for ling cod of the Oregon coast last weekend.  Toward the end of the day, I tied on a 12 oz. Metzler Halibut Jig (that's what is stamped in the crome plated, lead body).  We picked up 3 nice lings on three consecutive drops with it.  That finished the limit for the boat, and I didn't get to try it any more, but man did that jig get hit the minute it got down.

I'd like to give the jig to the boat's owner that took me out, to show my appreciation for the great trip.  But I'd like to be sure I can replace it, before I do anything rash.  I'm not THAT nice. :)

Anyway, I've done some searching tackle shops and googled for it, and I can't find them.  Do you know of any on-line tackle shops that carry 'everything' that I can check?

Thanks in advance for any help you can supply.

Answer
Hi Ace;

 Have you tried Cabelas.com and Basspro.com for that jig?  Both are mainly freshwater fishing and hunting sites but have very extensive saltwater fishing selections.  I have bought much of my gear through them lately and have generally found that they had whatever I needed.  Another unlikely source is a place like K-Mart or Walmart.  I live on LI NY and because of the amount of saltwater fishing that is done here, both stores have quite a selection of saltwater tackle, things I assume you would not find in the majority of their stores in areas away from the coast.

 Another possibility would be to contact the manufacturer of the jig, on line or even by telephone.  I believe the type and size jig you describe is made by "Viking" or maybe an abreviated name like "Vike" jigs.

 I hope this gets you what you want.  If you cannot find it, get back to me because I am quite sure I can find it in one of the local bait and tackle shops.  If all else fails, I would be able to provide you with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of these local shops, and though they are not mail order establishments, you would probably be able to get what you want sent out.

PS  I had a chance to check the internet and both Cabalas and Basspro have what you want, though each carries a differnent brand.
