jigging
Question
i have a few questions on jigging. 1st what is the best rod for jigging that i can then also use to cast for fish on the surface (medium-heavy?).
also should one tie on wire onto the leader as the target species might have teeth.
Answer
the best rod for jigging is a rod with a slow action blank (parabolic) this helps the action of th ejig (vertical jigs) this also acts as a shock absorber and helps your amrs and shoulders from the stress of jigging.
as far as fighting he fish is concerned, a slow action rod gives you more leverage since you would be fighting the fish with the backbone (the back section of the rod) as opposed to the forward part of the rod (middle to tip section), a bonus is that the fish has to fight the reel directly.
wire reduces your strikes by around 40-50%. if you have to use wire, use the thinnest, shortest trace you can.
otherwise, use high strength lines on 80-100 lbs test in floro carbon or trolling leader material.
