different types of penn spinning reels
Question
Hi,
I'm looking for a serious saltwater reel (tropical fishing, I presently live in Madagascar), and I keep an eye on penn big spinning reels (750, 850 or 950)on Ebay. But I'm getting confused because one can find for example a 850 SS, 850SSM, or 8500. Anyone could tell me the difference and the main caracteristics ?
Answer
I was going to put that this is outside of my expertise but instead I wanted to help a little. The main information that I can pass on is about the 850SS vs. the 850SSm. These are both the exact same reel EXCEPT the 850SS has stainless Steel and Graphite parts and the 850SSm has "METAL" parts I do not know the reasoning behind the companies decision to make the reel with two different "types" of metal but they must have had a reason. I would suggest the Stainless Steel and Graphite due to the very corrosive nature of Saltwater the "Metal" model may not be as durable. However both are Stainless Steel hence the "SS" designation but one is with graphite the other is with metal. as for the other models typically the lower the number is either a smaller model or a previous version the Higher number is a newer model or larger. Hope this helps but I urge you to find more information through directed searches. about "differences between Penn Reels" or through "Penn Reel Reviews"
