Do fish lay eggs with hard shells?

Most fish species lay eggs without hard shells. These eggs have a soft, flexible membrane rather than a hard calcium-based shell like those of birds and reptiles. The membrane protects the fish eggs during development and allows oxygen and nutrients to enter the egg while waste products are removed. Soft-shelled fish eggs may be round, oval, or elongated in shape and can vary in size and color depending on the fish species. Once fertilization occurs, the embryo inside the egg will develop and eventually hatch into a larval or juvenile fish. Some bony fish like the gar family (Lepisosteidae) are considered "primitive fishes" in the teleosts and do lay eggs with protective gelatinous coatings which do harden through contact with water and resemble hardened shells with the exception of gar embryos being attached via thread at the top part of the shell
