Fly reel loading
Question
Which way is best for loading line on a fly reel? With the line coming off the top of the reel parallel to the rod and straight into the first guide or off the bottom of the reel as seems common in most fly fishing photos? With my little trout rod it didn't make any difference but I'm off to Belize in two weeks for bigger fish with a new 8 wt rod and it seems the top take-up makes more sense and puts less stress on the first guide.
Lastly, any advice for flats fishing fly line?
Thanks
Answer
Dave,
Fly reels are designed to operate with the line exiting the bottom of the reel because of the drag system and there is no concern with stress to the first guide. Stress on the rod typically occurs in the top half of the rod when fighting a fish.
A properly functioning drag system and sturdy reel will be extremely important when you head to Belize for flats fishing.
As far as a flats fishing line, I would recommend a weight forward 8 weight or even step up to a 9 weight. The reason for the step up in weight is you will likely encounter wind and the extra weight of the line will help you get the fly casted effectively.
You will also want to bring a spare line in the event you have a fish make a run and it takes off with your line. As far as color of the line, I would go with a light, pale, or clear, good quality line. There are lines that are called "tropical" that are made specifically for flats fishing. Also, make sure you have backing filled to the capacity of the reel.
I hope this helps, good luck with your trip.
