how to cast
Question
hello, i am a fisherman of about 3 years. i have struck up an interest in fly fishing, so as you can see i am a begginer. so can answer my one question? what is the proper way to cast?
Answer
I am glad you have decided to give fly fishing a try, it will bring a new dimension to your fishing experience.
To cast properly, make sure you have a balanced rod/line/reel, be patient, and practice often. One of the biggest keys to a good cast is to keep the range of motion of the rod between 10 and 2 o'clock. When you cast, picture a clock to the side of you with hands at 10 and 2 o'clock - the forward motion of the rod stops at 10 and your back cast stops at 2 o'clock. During the back cast, you are looking for a gentle loop of line sort of the shape of a paper clip (hopefully that makes sense). Your cast should be slow and steady - applying too much power on either the forward or back cast will cause more harm than good (wind knots, poor distance, and sloppy casts).
There are a number of books available on the subject and one of the most well known authors and fly fisherman is Lefty Kreh - check out this link... http://flyfisherman.com/skills/lkcastingbasic/
Hope this helps,
