Trout fishing
Question
Dear Gary,
I recently got a fly fishing rod for my birthday. I am interested in fishing rivers
and will like to no what to use and where i should cast to catch the big one.
For specific seasons.
Answer
Brendan,
Your question has many variables so I will try to answer as concisely as possible. Deciding what species you're fishing for will determine when, where, and what to use for fly fishing. The area you live in has many opportunities for great Trout fishing so I will gear my response to that species.
One of the keys to successful Trout fishing is matching the hatch. When you are on the water fishing, it is important to observe what bugs are evident on and around the water. Finding out what bugs fish are feeding on will increase your odds of landing a big fish. For instance, if fish are feeding on bugs at the surface of the water (i.e., rising fish), you will want to try using dry flies (such as Adams, Stimulators, etc) and match your fly to the approximate size and color of the real thing.
When fishing rivers, fish tend to stay close to cover and easy food. Fish will often seek cover in undercut banks or brushy areas. Areas where there are riffles and eddies provide fish with less current and an easier means of getting food.
Seasons will vary greatly depending on water conditions, weather, and fishing pressure. One of the best times for fishing will be around the time when fish are in the spawn.
I hope this helps,
Gary
