First Time Fly Fishing
Question
I need to dummies guide on how to setup a fly fishing reel (pictures would definately help). Any idea where I can find this type of information?
Answer
Hi Bruce!
I'd recommend the book "Curtis Creek Manifesto" for any beginning flyfisherman. It's informative and funny, and all the pictures are hand-drawn, like cartoons. About $10 from most fly shops. It has the info you need.
Most fly shops will set up your reel for you if you buy the fly line and backing there. I set up all my own reels, though, since I often buy fly line mail order at a discount.
By "set up," I assume you mean installing the backing and fly line?
There's a great picture tutorial here:

I do some things just slightly different than that tutorial. I use a nail knot to attach the rear of the fly line to the backing. And I use a braided loop connector on the tip of the fly line; just remember to secure the loop connector BOTH with the heat shrink tube that's included, and some Loon UV Cement. To keep tension when winding, you can run the backing and then fly line under a book on the table.
A couple more tips:
Don't pull the backing or fly line off the side of the spool, or it will twist when winding. 100 yards of backing is about right for most fly reels. The top of the loops of fly line when you are done should be at least 1/4 inch under the lips of the spool--if they are higher, you have to go back and remove some backing.
