connecting the no knot eyelet to the yellow plastic fly line
Question
I have been fishing all my life, but i have never fly fished. a week ago my wife got me a ready to fish fly pole, and it has the worst directions on it ever. I went to a local fish and tackle store to get some advice and i got very little help from them, but i did figure out the backing goes on first and then the yellow plastic line (not sure wwhat that is called)next it came with this very little no knot eyelet that i would assume goes into the yellow plastic line, but for the life of me i cant get it to go in that line more than about 2 mm. am I doing something wrong? is there a secret to this? Any help what so ever would be great!
thanks
Answer
Bradley,
I used the no knot eyelets when I first started and found them to be difficult to use at best. Over time, the eyelet can actually become rusted and fail so I stopped using them. There are two solutions to to attaching leader to flyline as you are trying to do. The first, some fly lines no have loops permanently attached where you secure the leader to the fly line. Second, you can use an Albright or Nail knot to make the attachment from leader to fly line and fly line to backing. Try the following link for an explanation of the different knots.

I hope this helps,
