Question
writing
I would like to know the value of the above rod. I have original tube and sock. Rod is in excellent condition. The two faults are a dent in the cardboard tube and to the right of the Montague seal , the words "genuine Tonkin" are almost gone, along with the varnish over the words. There is also some darkening or almost blackening of certain strips of the bamboo.
see pics.Otherwise top notch. Would this be rated as good, very good or excellent? And the value? I am in the process of making an inventory of all my vintage equipment and would appreciate this info. Thank you so much. Well, can only send one pic.
AnswerHello Gretchen,
Your Montague rod is one of the most common models from the most prolific maker of bamboo rods.
If all sections are of equal length, it has moderate collectible value, probably in the range of $100 to $200.
The missing writing on the rod shaft and the missing varnish would probably rate it as "good"
condition at best. There is no allowance for age in when grading a bamboo rod - if it's truly "excellent" it must be without any faults ans showing only minor use.
You might want to post your photos on the bamboo fly rod forum. Post all you have and the more detail, the better.
Here's the web address.

Post it in the section for appraisals and you'll get enough responses to get a good idea, though I'm sure I'm in the right range of value.
I hope this was useful to you!
