phillipson fly rod
Question
I have a phillipson bamboo fly rod in mint condition it says Phillipson Perfection Impregnated 7' 3oz H&H signed John Johnson with original cloth bag and metal tube can you give me some idea of its value.
Answer
Phillipson was a Denver rodmaker from about 1945 until 1960. The impregnated rods were initiated in about 1952. John Johnson was probably the name of the original owner which was often applied at the factory by customer request.
The rods are fine fishing tools and of moderate collectible interest. A 7' rod with two tips of the proper length would probably be valued in the $400 to $500 range depending on the condition of the rod and the presence of its original rod bag and aluminum tube.
The marking that you saw as "H&H" is actually "HEH", which means that the rod was designed to cast a double taper line size 5, known these days as a DT5. That old line designation "HEH", etc. was abandoned by the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association in about 1962.
I hope this helps you - let me know if any other questions arise.
