Granger Special Fly Rod
Question
I picked up about 6-8 bamboo fly rods at an auction yesterday. One of them is in VERY good condition. The cork grip looks like it was never used. The reel seat says Wright & McGill Rod Co. and above that it says Pat. April 12, 1938. It has two tips with it. All of the line guides are wrapped in gold thread but they are so well done that at first glance it looks like gold tape. However, on closer inspection you can distinctly see the threads. It didn't come with a tube or anything, just a bunch of rods wrapped together and sold as bamboo fly rods. I also have rods that say Black River Genuine Tonkin Cane, Horrocks Ibbotson on one side and Chas Hoak on the other, 2 that say Montague (one with what appears to be a plastic reel seat), one that says Pocono and several that have no identifying marks at all.
Can you provide me with any insight as to the value of these rods, especially the Granger Special one? I paid a total of $100 for all of them and thought I had hit the mother lode, but my searching on the internet so far seems to indicate that I got a pretty good deal but not much more.
I REALLY appreciate any help you can offer me.
Thanks so much,
Steven
Answer
Hi Steven. Sounds like you did OK there. It hurts the values a bit that you did not get any with tubes or socks. And a HUGE part of the value of these rods is going to be condition. Some other important info is number of sections (2 piece or 3 piece), length and and line weight. But very generaly...the Montys and the H/I (the Pocono is an H/I rod too) are probably in the $100 to $300 range. The Black River rod I have no idea on. The Granger..this is where length and weight and time frame are important...but I'd guess it's probably worth anywhere between $400 and $1000. You need to have a professional look at them - particularly that one. I hope that helps.
