FLASH fly rod ?
Question
I was recently given an old cane fly rod with the advice that it was a Horrocks-Ibbotson, however, I have my doubts. The rod is 3 piece 9 feet, is 6 sided cane construction, metal joiners, has original GOLD eye bindings, a cigar shaped cork handle and "chrome" reel seat with a slide lock ( not screw type ) It has a RED oblong sticker near the handle with the word FLASH in gold lettering. There is no other lettering of any description on the rod or reel seat to further identify this rod. I would value your view as to what you consider it to be. Thanking you, David.
Answer
Hi David, The Flash was a model made by a company called Montague. It is most likely from the 20's or 30's. In mint condition it's probably worth around $300. Horrocks-Ibbotson and Montague rods are similar and were made and sold by the thousands. I hope this helps,
