Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod
Question
Hello my fiance has a bamboo vintage fly fishing rod. It says "This Rod Rebuilt Same finish as given twenty five dollars (in numbers not words) Rods - By Hobson Salem Ore For H.D Bondy - Costella Calaf". It 9'6" 3 sections of rod with a 4th handle section that detaches. It has 13 eyes not sure what they are made off. It came with a wooden case that seems to be original and that fits snuggly into a canvas bag. Just want to know a little bit more about this rod for my fiance. Thank you.
Answer
Hi Crystal - Here is what I can tell you...Harry Hobson was a well known rod builder in Oregon from 1880 to 1960. He built rods on high end blanks from Motague, another cane rod builder. I don't know if he built the rod in the first place but apparently he refinished it at some point in Salem, Oregon - where his shop was located for many years. HD Bondy would be the rods owner. At 9'6" with a fighting butt (that detachable handle section) it's a heavier rod for fishing Salmon and Steelhead - probably a modern 7 or 8wt rod. I hope that helps.
