The Holland Splitcane rod
Question
Dear Mr. Douglas,
I have a spltcane rod/set which consists of 2 handles, 3 tip sections and 8 sections in between. So it is possible to make 3 different length of rods with all the sections.
On the brass but of one of the handles is an engraving that says "The Holland" and a production number.
It is possible that this is a Milwards rod, do you know anything more about this rod.
Regards,
Ronald
Answer
Hi Ronald,
It sounds like a Milwards rod. They made a trunk rod called The Holland that was wooden and likely would carry the name on into a model made from cane. The configuration of 2 handles, 8 mid sections and 3 tips is correct for the Milwards model The Holland. I do not have much more information on the rod.
As to value, probably anywhere from $300-$600 depending on actual condition of the rod would be my guess...and it is strictly a guess. I could be off by 50% easily.
It is an unusual rod given the variety of sections and the ability to make multiple rod sfrom the pieces. I would assume it would have good collector interest.
Thanks, Joe
