value of this package
Question
My brother in law recently purchased a wooden box with two rods in it. one appears to be a deep sea, two piece rod. the only markings are "champion".no guides on the butt section and three guides on the tip section. the blank is octogon shaped and appears to be cane. Its a very heavy blank, no play in the tip very stiff. overall length is 6'3".
2nd rod is a fly rod...only markings was "Pigeon" on the butt section. Rod had 5 sections
Butt section 2'9"
one tip 2'9" will make one rod 2pc only length 5'6" very stiff
middle section 2'9"
two tips 2'9" will make one rod 3pc length 8' leaves one spare tip action is very soft.
this rod is also octagon shaped
wooden box contained apprx 3/dozen ugly flies, some leaders, and backing
one leader package had a label with Kiraku & co.inc any idea on who the manufacture was is it worth anything ?
I certainly appreciate your time.
Thank-You
Answer
Bill,
Pretty sure your rods have 6 sides or hexagonal not 8 /octagonal.
I have seen my share of Kiraku rods and they have little to no resale value.
Originally sold by the thousands to GIs in a light long box with lures and huge flies . Mostly considered trinkets by collectors but memorial to GIs , they have little resale or fishing value. I have never seen any written history on them in English except the following. http://www.maxrod.net/article/
There is a book on Goggle books, with a little history and a limited preview: Bamboo In Japan by Nancy Moore Bess
