FS65 Powell spinning rod
Question
I have a 6'6" Powell spinning rod (fiberglass I assume) I have had this rod since around 1980 with the Walton Powell name on it. It has never been used and in a Fenwick case for protection. Can you tell me anything about the value of it and how many he made like this. I can't find it on the internet anywhere. Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
G. Harris
Answer
G. Harris,
You would think this rod would be worth something but it is not. And I doubt you can get history unless you can find a Powel employee from the 50.
I am a bamboo man not fiberglass. Fiberglass is just not collected like bamboo. It was made from the 1950s to the 70s.
And spin / cast rods aren't collected like fly rods so low resale values.
I have no specific history or books on fiberglass, I believe they are rare or don't exist, but here's two web sites that are about fiberglass:
http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbwiki.com/
http://www.fiberglassflyrodders.info/:
Please be cautious about someone telling you your rod is worth thousands until they offer cash. People want fiberglass to be collectable like bamboo but that doesn't make it so.
The fact there is almost no history books written on fiberglass tells you a lot of how much the collectors think of their worth.
Please provide feedback, nominations are appreciated. (please remember I am a volunteer. feedback is the only payment I get, and if you answer is not the answer you wanted it is still backed up by research and experience)
Luck,
