H-I veanley
Question
I have this fly rod in perfect condition 3 piece, with 2 tips, in bag and tube. it has never been fished, the sticked has a trout with HI and veanley in front of the reel seat, what is it worth??? thanks...
Answer
Evan,
I recognize your rod as made by HI or Horrocks-Ibbotson Co., it is not very valuable.
They are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were sort of mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.
A small portion of these rods are decent fishing tools . It is the collector community that decides the prices , please don't blame the messenger.
I find two books are available at larger libraries to get history and or value:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) ,add 30% due to the age of the book.
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair

By the way it is Vernley not veanley for a model name.
Sinclair says the fish logo was used from 1923 to 1929.
An old rod you would think is valuable but my experience is that you won't resale for much.
Homel doesn't mention your model but there were so many . He does giive the average value for a H-I fly rod as $22, 62 and 115 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. Check ebay - I am pretty sure you are not going to get Homels estimate.
Condition - if it has never been used the color of the cork handle is blonde to tan - not darkened by hands or missing any chunks.
Luck,
Mac
