Question
Hexagonal Split Bamboo
I would like to get as much information possible on this type of rod. I have one that belonged to my grandfather and if memory serves me correctly, it belonged to his father (my great grandfather). I am attaching an image and I have found a rod looking very much like this one on an old (circa 1900) poster.
As you can see in the picture the reel would mount below the cork and there are no marks on the cord. Plus there is no labels on the outer case or any of the rod sections. The sections are approximately 36" in length. The section with the repair tape on it has the thicker final eyelet.
My grandfather died in 1955 and was born around the turn of the century 1895 to 1900, I'm not sure of the exact year. As a child I never saw him use this rod, but I did see maintain it. The unit has been stored for well over fifty years. I would like to know the value of the item.
Thank you for your help.
AnswerTerry ,
Bamboo rods were made from 1860s to 1950s in US and Europe.
I am unsure if the photo I have is from your rod or "I am attaching an image and I have found a rod looking very much like this one on an old (circa 1900) poster."
I don't have enough information to help you and if you want to try :
Check metal for id and patents ?
Weight in oz?
What is the diameter (not circumference) of the rod above the handle, that is flat to flat? What type of metal nickel-silver, tin, or chrome platted brass?
Does the rod fit together.
Is the finish smooth ?
What writing is on the cloth sock or tube ?
Send me pictures of the metal part as close up as possible.
Where do you think this might have been purchased ?
I have id ed a rod with only 2 letter on the label and a drawing of a rooster.
If you can describe any fragments of a label , it would help.
Sorry wish I could help more
It might be either a rose or a weed
Luck,
Mac
