QUESTION: Thanks again Bob - we were just trying to find out if the reel was my wife's Dad or her Grandad - the 1930's is more in line with her Grandad.; But no, I could not find a Patent # on the reel, box or instruction manual. I've never seen a reel like this and still am trying to figure our how it was used. Found it when we were cleaning out the house - he was an representative for the Indian Bureau and was stationed in various places - Alaska, Dakota's , etc. Will probably give it to one of my wifes cousins that trout fishes a lot. Thanks again for the fast response.

the free for fly fishing. When fly fishing your casting using the weight of the line (instead of the weight of the lure). So, the fisherman slowly lets out the line, after catching a fish or starting over, the line has to be wound back into the reel.
This reel has a spring loaded mechanism that is wound up as the line is cast out. To bring the line back in, the lever is depressed then the line is automatically reeled back into the spool.
