edwards & Son quadrate #42 rod

Question

edwards & Son
Hello Rich, I own A Edwards & Son # 42 rod in excellant condition and I would like you to evalutate this rod for me. it's 7 1/2' and the to tips are the same length with original tube. Thank You Joe Damiano

Answer
Joe,
I am assuming your rod has flat sides and made of bamboo.
I am assuming your rod says W. E. Edwards and Sons as opposed to a possibly much more valuable E.W. Edwards.

I hope you understand but I always do public answers to help others who might have something similar.

I assume it is 4 sided (quadrate) and was made by Bill, E.W.s son in between 1939 and 1956 on Whitney Avenue in Mt Carmel, California.
A short fly rod like yours is more valuable than a longer one like 9 ft.
There  is a lot of history to be found on E.W. like Playing With Fire: The Life and Fly Rods of E.W. Edwards by Patrick C. Garner. Book not at the library but available at http://www.whitefishpress.com/bookdetail.asp?book=59
It is where I got the information I gave you above.

Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell  p 144- 146 (might be at the library)
The "sons" was Scott.  Aj Also says that the 40 series were next up the line from lessor rods in the 30s series, from 6-8 feet, have oxidized fittings, only occasionally shoe up at sales. He says "they sell at premium prices, they're  perhaps the most exotic and expensive of the Edward's family creations"

Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book. He does not specifically mention  #42.

Homel gives the W. E. Edwards "Quad" #41 fly rod 7' with an extra tip, 2 sections the  value of  $300, 700 and $1200 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Edwards is not mentioned in Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair, but probably alot in   Classic rods & rodmakers  by Martin J Keane

I'd love more pictures of the rod - i.e. where's the 42 on the rod [email protected]

I quote these books written by researchers so you know I am not making it all up, But I include my experience as well.

It has taken me the best part of an hour to write this up , please take a few seconds to provide feedback. Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.

Luck,
Mac
