Cross Surf Casting Rods
Question
Rich,
I came bought a pair of matched surf casting rods at an estate sale and they look like they are made of bamboo. The cross section shape of the rod is a "D". The rods are single piece, 5 foot long with 5 agate eyelets and nickel roller tips. The same number of "05326" is marked on the flat top of each rod.
The almost identical handles are fitted with nickel silver, rattan wrapped, 2 foot long but only one is marked "CROSS" "DOUBLE BUILT" and the adjustable ferule has "Pat.FEB.15.1927". If you can tell me anything about their history or value I would appreciate it.
Thank you Ken
Answer
Ken,
Cross Rod Company made rods from 1919 to 1925, Wes Jordon is the rod maker usually associated with Cross but there was a rod maker named Cross.
Cross rods were the better quality rods built by Southbend - if not developed then influenced by Jordon. South bend bought Cross and brought in Jordon in 1925.
South Bend built Cross Double built from 1925 - 1950. I have no written info on specific year for the model 05326.
You might try the book by Spurr & G. Jordon, Wes Jordon: Profile of a Rodmaker, Centennial [1992] - Insight on Wes Jordon and other rodmakers.
Most of the decent resale values are for bamboo fly rods. It sounds like a good rod but it is not even mentioned in Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000)
But he does mention Cross Double Built fly rods.
Sorry I don't have more. My advise is concentrate on the surf or casting aspect in your search.
I know from experience that there is no comparison to the market for fly to casting rods.
Luck,
Mac
