QuestionQUESTION: Hi Joe,
I have recently inherited an antique fishing rod from my great uncle. It is square and was made in 1938. It has a us patent #2104494. It has steel guides , is two piece and about 6 1/2 ft long. I thas a roller guide tip.
Thanks
Fred
ANSWER: Hi Fred,
What is the rod made of...bamboo, fiberglass, steel? I assume it is a boat rod or standup rod for saltwater fishing with the roller tip.
Any hints at all on who made it?
Thanks, Joe

QUESTION: Hi Joe, I believe it is made from bamboo. According to the patent, it is a laminated rod and looks like it is constructed that way. There was a label on it, but it has been damaged, so I can not make out the mfg. name. It is a boat rod, and your assumption about a salt water rod is correct. It is very heavy, so does not seem practical for freshwater, although, it could be used for salmon or stripers, or other really large freshwater game fish. If a photo would help, I would be glad to forward one, just let me know what address to send it to.
Thanks,
Fred
AnswerHi Fred,
Thanks for the added information. Yes, a couple of pictures would be helpful. Send them to
[email protected] and I'll review them for you.
If possible take photos of the handle and reel seat, the rod shaft (including any remnants of the label, the guides and the tiptop. That should give me enough clues to get a lot farther.
Thanks, Joe
