Hurd Super caster FIshing rod

Question
Can you tell me when the Hurd super caster went from producing there rods with a smooth walnut grip handle to the knurled walnut grip handle? Was the smooth handle their earlier rod production? I have only seen two like this with the smooth walnut handle.  One is in a museum site which I visited on line. The second one bares the serial number 339. The reel has black knobs, its in great condition and has its original case.  Would you know the value of this rod? I've had a hard time finding any information on the production of these rods, production years, number of rods produced, ect.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Tracy

These rod/reel combinations were first available in 1946, possibly 1945 (based on patents). The walnut handle is the more common version, the other scarcer version had plastic grips (plastic introduced in 1947). This rod/reel combination came on the market at the same time spinning reels came out, which shortened its production run. Since spinning reels were easier to use, the super caster didn't last long - stopped production in 1951.

The advertisement I saw, showed that both smooth and knurled grips were available in 1947, with six lengths available.

They date to the 1940s. In excellent condition with the bag they run $150 to $200, more if you have the original box.

If you go to ORCA fishing reels, you can post questions directly to reel collectors
