QuestionRod 1
QUESTION: Have what I believe is a Demming hand made rod, Pat. # May 4,1920. Rod found in an old barn in an alum Winchester tube. Rod sock. Spare rod tip, but missing agate in top guide. No damage on rod, threads all in place, cork whole, no cuts or gouges.
ANSWER: Mike
From 1919 to 1925 E.W Edwards built bamboo rods for the munitions manufactory , Winchester.
EW is well known among collectors as a great maker and his rods bring good prices. Your s could be one of them but before I go that far I need a 4 digit model number .
What do you mean "Deming" got nothing in the way for a city ,model rodmaker associated with Winchester , named Deming. I am updating this answer . We don't get to see a follow up response until we answer the first so I missed you comment about it being Edwards not Deming.
I would look for a signature as well as a model number .Other wise send lots of detailed photos to
[email protected].
After 1925 you are looking at a South Bend rod.
How do you know it is a Winchester, sorry it has to be on the rod not the tube or rod sock. I have really seen a Montague(worthless ) in a Heddon tube and bag. I had a hard time trying to convince the owner of the poor quality of the components.
Spin rods just don't command the interest or value of fly rods.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the following prices for Winchester spin rods , two sections , 1 tip,'
values are for poor-fair, good-vg, and ex-mint , respectively.
Model 6405 light bait casting rod 5 1/2' (2/1) c.1928 40 100 195
Model 6340 bait rod 5' (2/1) agate guides c.1928 35 90 175
Let me know if you have a rod model and I will dig into it further in my E.W. Edwards book, Playing With Fire: The Life and Fly Rods of E.W. Edwards Published by White Fish Press author
Patrick C. Garner. It unfortunately is probably not going to be in the library.
Homel is at the library and maybe Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair .

Mac

QUESTION: Sliding reel clip had covered the "Winchester, Trade Mark, Made in the USA, 6380", located just below the top cork.
"Pat.May 4, 1920" is located on the sliding reel clip
Agate guides
AnswerMike
Good catch - sorry I could have told you where to look.
6380 is your model number.
Garner says this rod was hand made by E. W. Edwards. Only this model number was made or supervised by E.W.
I don't know the condition of your rod but lets say it is a least good . Conditions are not a subjective opinion. Homel gives very specific criteria on conditions, http://www.macsrods.com//Condition%20Homel.pdf will help you see what I mean
Value is a guess at $200.
Luck,
Mac
