A&I Rod
Question
I have recently Found a rod all I can see is Lake Side Bait Rod Abbey and Imbrie New york Fishing tackle thats made for fishing on a tag ...Genuine Tonkin Cane says on other side Came wrapped in a cloth sectioned pouch and an aluminum tube ...Can you tell me its worth ETC .. its 9'6 3pcs...
Answer
Donald,
Abbey & Imbrie did not make rods but sold them under their own name but made by other manufactures. I assume yours has flat sides made of bamboo, not round.
When ever I see the label "Genuine Tonkin Cane ", I think Horrocks-Ibbotson, as they used that label almost exclusively and made rods for A&I. respectively for -I made inexpensive almost mass production rods and are looked down upon by the collector community. Equally of a lesser resale value is the non fly rod, like your bait rod (handle below cork)
So your rod is not in my price book: Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide respectively for , Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
You can verify H-I made A&I rods in Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell.
Worth depends alot on condition. Homel doesn't mention a long H-I bait rod only short ones.
He gives the value of $15, 35 and $65 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively for the H-I 5 1/2 ft bait rod. But I have tried to sell bamboo bait rods with zero success. So I don't have a solid value , just a guess if you find a person who wants this and it is in good condition; of $40.
Luck,
Mac
