rod restoration
Question
Hi Joe,
I have a Horrocks Ibbotson Utica H boat rod I am considering to restore for a friend. As it stands now it is in excellent condition through out. It does need guides and I am considering wrapping on a set of Aftco rollers on it. What little I have been able to research on this brand's reputation would suggest that the early bamboo rods were not all that well made but, this glass rod seems to be quite stout and well made. Anything you can tell me about this rod would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Linnie,
Actually, the brand gets a lot of undeserved bad press in my opinion. Their bamboo rods are still around and some of them are still pretty decent fishing rods considering the mass production methods. Complaining about a rod because it is mass produced doesn't seem to extend to the graphite brands of today, but could just as easily. H-I was a popular brand of rods in the day and they were the rods made for anyone regardless of income level.
So much for the editorial. The fiberglass shaft is likely solid glass and should be able to handle the roller guides and tiptop. If it is hollow glass, it likely has sufficient wall thickness to do just fine.
Thanks, Joe
