Diamond Mfg. Co. Diamond brand
Question
I have a 3/1 split cane rod. It is marked Diamond Mfg Co. St. Louis Mo. Diamond Brand The Rod With A Rule- it has a 12 inch ruler decal going up the shaft from the cigar grip.
Sliding band nickel silver reel seat, Wood (cedar?) insert. Tapered shaft with some flaming on 9 foot shaft. Stripping guide and tip is red agate. Nickle silver winding check wrapped with red silk, tipped in black silk. Intermediate wraps full length of rod in red silk. Guides are red silk with black silk tips. Ferrules are also nickle silver.
The action reminds me of a Leonard Fairy Catskill, very tippy, and casts well with a DT7.
I cannot find anything on A Diamond Rod Company and any info you can provide would be appreciated.
Answer
Hi Steve,
If I recall correctly, Diamond/Diamond Edge rods were a house brand for Shapleigh Hardware and Sporting Goods in St. Louis. Look for information on Shapleigh or "Kleen Kutter" there should be plenty out there. I do not recall the maker, but I would guess it to be one of the mass production houses like H-I or Chubb/Montague.
This is not going to be a high dollar or high quality rod, but it can be a decent fishing rod. You have already discovered it works best with a 7WT line. The intermediate wraps make it sound like a Calcutta Cane rod rather than a Tonkin cane rod. May date from the early 1900s.
Thanks, Joe
