question about a Heddon fly rod

Question
Hello Sir,

I have a fly rod which was my father in laws, I can't seem to find any info about this particular model It is a Heddon Pal # 8406 Mark 3 8'3" power plus action is written on the rod and also the letters B. G B G. G a f (the f looks lick a backwards 3). I would appreciate any info you could give me on this rod. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Tim.
Heddon Mark III rods were made in the 60s and they are fiberglass. If they were bamboo you would find a lot more information.
" B. G B G. G a f (the f looks lick a backwards 3)" is the line weight and probably reads GBG , GBF or B. In modern line that would be 8 weight.

Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Heddon "Mark III" fiberglass fly rods 8-9', c.1965, with  out an extra tip, 2 sections the  value of  $7, 20 and $40 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Heddon: The Rod with the Fighting Heart By Michael Sinclair like most rod books ends in 1955, when bamboo  was replaced by fiberglass. Same with Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair. Lots of information on bamboo.

Fiberglass is just not collected like bamboo. It was made from the 1950s to the 70s.
I have no specific history or books on fiberglass, I believe they don't exist, but here's two web sites that on fiberglass:
http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbwiki.com/
http://www.fiberglassflyrodders.info/:
Please be cautious about someone telling you your rod is worth thousands until they offer cash. People want fiberglass to be collectable like bamboo but that doesn't make it so.

Luck,
Mac
