South Bend No.346 9 foot Flyrod
Question
I have a South Bend Fly rod No.346, in I think excellent condition. Also with cloth wrap and original tube. Bamboo looks great, no missing parts. Is this a trout rod or for bass. Would like to know what it might be worth.
Answer
William,
South Bend rod model numbers are a bit confusing, but there is logic to the system. Each rod was made in three actions; Wet Fly or Trout Action, Bass Action, and Dry Fly Action. The model number designates the rod's grade, or quality and the series number represents the type of action. For example, #159 is Trout Action, #59 is Bass Action, and #359 is Dry Fly Action. All of these Model 59 rods have the same wraps, hardware and other specifications -only the taper is different. This is according to Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair and I have cast enough SB to confirm it also. So your is a faster action , dry fly rod. I think you could call it a trout not bass.

Before I quote the price, let me say most people over evaluate their bamboo fly rods. Have you seen other bamboo rods?
Homel gives the South Bend 9' model #346 fly rod 9' c.1955 with an extra tip, 3 sections the value of $35, 80 and $150 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
In order to be excellent a rod must meet all of the following:
