Openface Reel
Question
I have purchased a Shimano Citica. I lined it and went to use it but I'm having lots of trouble. It backlashes everytime I throw. I use openface reels such as Abu Garcia's C series but don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Answer
Hi, Mike!! How are you today? Well let's see if I can give you some pointers. The reel you have is a very good reel!! You just have to "tune" it in to make it work properly. First off if your new to throwing baits on a baitcaster, take it out in the backyard or lake etc, and get your thumb trained on how to "thumb" the spool. What I mean get your thumb in the habit of when to apply more tension or less tension to the spool during a cast, this will aid greatly in reducing your chances of getting a "professional overrun" as the pro's call it. Next, what you want to do is dial the reel's brakes in. On the side of the reel there should be some way to access the centrifugal brakes. If you open it up and discover the brakes are not moved into the on position, move at least two to four of the brakes on to the on position. Do keep in mind that if you turn one on, the next brake directly across from that one should be turned to on too. Now that you got your brakes tuned, turn your attention to the cast knob. It's located behind the star drag. It's really simple to tune, with your reel in free spool and your lure or weight tied on, put your reel in free spool [push the cast button down] turn the cast knob until your lure slowly goes down. Don't have it where it sticks a little, and don't have it where it's falling at mach 5, have it fall slow and smooth. Now if your still having trouble here's how you can find out where your backlashing during the cast: If your backlash occurs during the BEGINNING of the cast adjust your brakes, now if your backlash happens near the end of your cast, adjust with the cast knob. Hey Mike I hope this info helps if you need anymore help, drop me another question!! Oh, sorry I couldn't get back sooner, long day at work, YAY. Until next time GOOD FISHING!!
