QuestionI have four beautiful bamboo fly rods that came from a wealthy plantation owner outside Thomasville Ga where I live. They are split bamboo and are in beautiful condition. There are no markings on them. They are three piece and have extra tips and resemble some of the older orvis rods. They each have a carrying case and cover. How would I get started determining maker and value.
AnswerMicajah,
The best reference I have found is a price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide by Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Others include
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair and
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
You should be able to get to these books at your local library.
I do a written estimate $15 per,

If you want to try again, as I say on the web site where you asked this question:
Please
If you are asking for the id or value of an old rod please give a
complete description send pictures especially labels or logos to me,
[email protected] and a complete description including any of following that you can:
Is it? fly or casting rod ? Reel seat is below or above the cork handle ?
Check metal for id and patents ? What is it made of; bamboo ( flat sided) fiberglass or graphite ( round)? Weight in oz? What is the diameter (not circumference) of the rod above the handle? Where and when was it purchased ? What type of metal nickel-silver, tin, or chrome platted brass? A complete description of any logos or labels. Do the sections fit together ?
Length of rod per section and number of sections. Total rod length.
*example of a thorough description of a label:
The Shakespeare decal is olive green ovals with gold foil banner bearing the word 揝hakespeare?in script. The remainder of the of the lettering is block style reading on top Honor Built and on the bottom of oval , Made in USA. The writing is away from the grip.
