QuestionDear Mr. McGaughey, I have a bamboo rod Heddon 9', 3 pieces, 2 tips. The only writing on the rod is "Heddon" diagonal, near the cork handle, that is cigar class. There are some writing in the tube, but it磗 impossible read them (seems nickel or nickel brass). Reel seat seems nickel. First snake is a ring with some kind of red stone, very polished. Coul you tell me modell, when has it build, and AFTMA number? Thank you, very much.
AnswerFernando,
A diagonal writing of "Heddon" across flats tells me the rnage of years for your rod is from 1924 to 1939.
If there is any other writing - or it is worn off , then it is a much newer rod , 1939- 1954.
Does the cork handle have a thumb rest? A piece of the cork that is cut out to the shape of a thumb. This is supported by Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook Heddon The Rod with the FIGHTING HEART- BOTH BY Michael Sinclair

The metal is probably Nickel Silver.
The stripper guide has a agate or agatine - to be expected.
I would assume there is a 2 digit model number written on the rod itself. The model number does influence the resale price dramatically. You can send pictures to
[email protected] if you want.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book. Once we have model number , Homel would give us a value.
AFTMA
It has been my experience that most 9 ft rods like yours will take a 6 weight rod. But any modern line is going to have a thicker diameter than the line originally used.
Luck,
Mac
