ID of Horrocks & Ibbotson fly rod
Question
Rich: Found thsi fly rod just as someone was putting it into the dumpstezr!!! so being a fly fisherman picked it up . I t is a 3 piece rod, cork handled with bottom reel seat (alum. reel screw with black plastic handle and alum butt. The logo decal is rectangular in shape and the colors are gold, black and the background green with gold edging. The info on the decal is Horrocks. Ibbotson Co. (the H, S and C are large letters in black the name of the company is otherwise in gold. underneath the Co. name is "Trade Mark reg. u.s. pat. off. then below that it's Hexi- Super- Cane then below is UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A. then below the decal label in yellowish gold script is written (words flowing toward rod hadle) "Double Built and below that Hi test.
The rod is a brownish varnish color. Is Hexagonal shaped with wrap of either brown or perhaps a dark maroon coloring; it also has a Red circular stripe around the rod circumference before and after each wrap at guides. The first part of the three piece has a wooden tip (black) that fits into what appears to be a brass plated metal (or perhaps just has coats of varnish on the metal?) this is the only remaining metal ferrule other ends are wooden with a black color , obvioulsy some parts (ferrules guides, perhaps even another whole section equalling a four piece rod (?) are missing) Would love to know what I've rescued and perhaps if its worth restoring , so I might at least hang it up in the fishing cottage! Thanks in Advance for your help and consideration. Mike Conroy

What you have discovered is a great rod to learn how to restore with. It is never going to be worth much. I fished one like it for years and it brought me great pleasure.
Horrocks-Ibbotson rods are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were mass produced , rather heavy and very slow.
There was a reason someone threw it away. Does it really have wood parts? not bamboo?
You can read about the history and get an idea of their value in the following books:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value
Guide Homel, Dan. 1997
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair ( good info on old rods , too) You could better date your rod with this book - I don't see the decal / logo you described but you may.
You can frequently find these books in major libraries.
The decorative wraps often called intermediate wraps , if original date the rod to 1930s or before. HI started in 1900. I know an really old one should be valuable, but they aren't. The used these wraps because they didn't trust their hide glue.
It probably was a 9 foot rod with 3 sections, 2 tips.
Luck,
Mac
