Question
Orvis Superfine
Dear Rich,
I have a 6ft Orvise Impregnated "Superfine" fly rod serial # 39935. The handle and windings are all in excellent condition. I do not have the case for it. I am really interested in its value. Thanks, Chuck
AnswerCharles,
I am assuming your rod is bamboo (flat sided) and a fly rod (reel below the handle). I do not know how many sections, though.
Orvis has and continues to make quality fly rods, yes they still making bamboo rods.
I have a serial number list but your serial number, 39935, is not in it. The serial number list is not all inclusive. Most of the Orvis rods I have heard about are not in it.
1 and 2 piece rods are more collectable than 3 piece rods.
shorter rods like yours are more valuable than longer
Price Book: Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Orvis 6' model "Superfine" fly rod (1 piece) c.1960 the value of $150, 400, and 800 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
Homel gives the Orvis 6 1/2' model "Superfine" fly rod c.1964 with an extra tip, 2 sections the value of $150, 375, and 600 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
I have found if you call Orvis 888-235-9763, they have a non digital , paper source with more complete serial numbers. I have also discovered that if you ask for a value they will put you off but if you ask for age, maker, and model then you will get some help. With that information I might be able to pin down more information.
Luck,
Mac
