wright&mcgill fly rod 7.5 trailmaster
Question
this is a 4pc. fly rod with tube & cloth bag. never been used. pat.1938 no.4tmf line dt 6.f. it has an eagle emblem with letter a under it. is this a bamboo or fiberglass rod? how much would a
rod in superb condition like this be worth?v46
Answer
Bill,
This rod is probably fiberglass. The sides are round , which bamboo has 6(usually) flat sides.
Eagle claw purchased Wright McGill about the time , 1950s, when bamboo rods were beingreplaced by fiberglass. I have never seen am Eagle Claw bamboorod, nor is it in my books. The line weights for fly lines "4tmf line dt 6.f" are modern also leaning to fiberglass.
Value it is not in my Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
nor is fiberglass mentioned in any detail in:
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
Fishing Tackle: A Collector's Guide Hardcover, 1991 Graham Turner (hard to find)
So if you can sell it for $50 to $100 you are lucky. Too bad as it is probably a good fishing too.
Check ebay for prices.
Luck,
Mac
