battenkill history
Question
Hi
I have a 8ft 3/2 battenkill serial no 67927.
I was jus wanting to know some history on the rod.
Can you help?
Answer
Adam,
I have a data base of Orvis rod serial numbers but I rarely find rods that people ask about.
Orvis has been in business since before the Civil War. Orvis is still in business and you can read their history at :
http://www.orvis.com/intro.aspx?subject=447&bhcp=1
Most Battenkill rods are impregnated with tar like finish. Most Battenkills are 70s rods, but they start in 1948 and continue. Impregnation was invented by Jordon in 1946.
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
Homel gives the Orvis 81/2 Battenkill rods , with an extra tip, 2 sections a value of $95, 200, and 395 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
I suggest you call Orvis, 888-235-9763 . I know from experience that if you ask for value they will put you off, but if you ask for date , maker etc, you will get some historical information.
Luck,
Mac
