Question
True TemperMontague 77
rod extends through wood grip green 6 1/2 ft. Can you please tell what year this rod is and what it is made of? How to care for it and how much it could be worth? It is a great shape. Please let me know if the pictures were a problem. This is a great service and thank you!
AnswerRandi,
The rod appears to have round sides instead of flat like wood or bamboo.
It doesn't look like graphite and appears to be made out of fiberglass.
The reel in between 2 handles and rod length tells me it is a boat or sea rod. It is not a fly rod.
It is probably fiber glass and is not going to be in the history books. It is not going to be very valuable either.
True temper rods were sold at Ace hardware .
Not bamboo and not fly makes it not collectable.
Strike three it was made by Montague - little respect for them in the collectors community.
It was probably made in the 1950s or possibly 1960s ,maybe even 70s, when graphite came into popularity.
The most you can get for it is from a restaurant as a wall hanger. top $50 , average $25.
I have no specific history or books on fiberglass, I believe they don't exist, but here's two web sites that on fiberglass:
http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbwiki.com/
http://www.fiberglassflyrodders.info/
Be wary of people saying fiberglass is worth hundreds or thousands unless they are prepared to offer you the same.
Luck,
Mac
