gliebe pole

Thank you !! Rick
AnswerRick,
Your rod is a boat rod. If you try to sell this , don't call it a pole. Some less that honest people will see your lack of knowledge and could take advantage of that.
The maker is not in my memory, rod history or price books including:
Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

The Gliebe company was a sporting goods company in Brooklyn, NY. They did not make rods. Rather, they had rods made by other companies and their name put on the labels. This is a common practice in the industry and these are called trade or private label rods.
I have done some searching in the past on The Gliebe Company but I found very little information on available. It does appear to have done business from about 1902-1960 or so...at least, in Brooklyn...but it does not look like it was a rod building company. It was probably a retail outlet selling private label rods made by others with the Gliebe name on them. I don't know this for certain, but suspect it is the case.
I have found links to online auctions for rods with the Gliebe name that were listed in the $20-$50 range.
If yours is six sided and looks like wood, it is probably bamboo. If it is round and looks like wood, it is probably greenheart.
Your rod can be fished with assuming all components are present and there are no cracks or splits or any obvious damage.
Luck,
Mac
