Actionrod extendocane pole
Question
Hello,
I own a Actionrod "extendo" Model 5224 fiberglass cane pole.
It extends to 23 feet from a tubular holder that when collapsed, is 55" long. It has rubber caps on both ends and a line holder that reads " South Bend Line Keeper " on it. It has 6 sections. It is not damaged in any way and the eye is attached. I would like to find out the age and value please if you could help.
Thank You
Answer
Paul,
You rod is either cane (bamboo) or fiberglass, those are mutual exclusive term.
I would be surprised if the label read Actionrod "extendo" Model 5224 fiberglass cane pole. "
Most guys in the biz call them rods.
I have seen long rods but under 20 feet .
So you have something unique, but I doubt it has resale value
Actionrod built their own blanks until their operations were swept up into the True Temper conglomerate.
Cabelas makes a graphite rod model close to Actionrod but I think yours is not Cabelas but is an independent . In my Shakespeare and Pflueger Rods database , no mention of 5224 .
I am a bamboo man not fiberglass. Fiberglass is just not collected like bamboo. It was made from the 1950s to the 70s.
I have no specific history or books on fiberglass, But here's two web sites that on fiberglass:
http://fiberglass-fly-rods.pbwiki.com/
http://www.fiberglassflyrodders.info/
Please be cautious about someone telling you your rod is worth thousands until they offer cash. People want fiberglass to be collectable like bamboo but that doesn抰 make it so.
Luck,
Mac
